A violent clash erupted outside the Sanwaliya Ji temple in Chittorgarh, Rajasthan, on Saturday, August 23, when shopkeepers allegedly attacked devotees, police reported. A video of the incident, which surfaced on social media on Sunday, has gone viral, showing shopkeepers beating visitors with sticks and fists. The brawl stemmed from a dispute over a devotee’s bag that went missing from a prasad shop, escalating into a physical confrontation.
According to posts on X, the altercation began when a devotee slapped a shopkeeper during an argument, prompting the shopkeeper and others to retaliate with lathis (sticks). Devotees reportedly threw stones in response, leading to chaos. No formal case has been registered, police confirmed, though an investigation is underway to identify those involved.
This incident echoes a similar clash near Sikar’s Khatushyamji temple in July 2025, where shopkeepers assaulted a family seeking rain shelter, raising concerns about recurring violence at religious sites. Local police and temple authorities have appealed for calm as public outrage grows.
