In a harrowing development linked to the infamous RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case, the body of 11-year-old Suranjana Singh, niece of life-sentenced convict Sanjay Roy, was discovered in a partially hanging state inside a cupboard at her family home in Kolkata's Bhowanipore area. The incident, reported on Tuesday, has ignited public fury, leading to a violent confrontation where locals assaulted Suranjana's father, Bhola Singh, and stepmother, Pooja, as they attempted to flee the residence. Police intervened to rescue the couple, escorting them to Alipore police station amid escalating tensions.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene, with neighbors dragging Pooja by her hair and beating her, while Bhola was thrashed with shoes in an outpouring of communal anger. The allegations stem from long-standing claims of severe physical and mental abuse inflicted on Suranjana by her parents. Neighbors recounted instances where the child was ejected from the home late at night, even at 2 a.m., leaving her profoundly traumatized. The girl's grandmother further alleged that the couple routinely beat her with belts and banged her head against walls over trivial matters, painting a picture of unrelenting domestic torment.
Bhola Singh, who was previously married to Sanjay Roy's elder sister Babita—Suranjana's biological mother—remarried Pooja, Babita's younger sister, following Babita's suicide several years ago. Suranjana, a Class 5 student, was found with a piece of clothing tied around her neck from a hanger in the wardrobe upon Pooja's return home. Rushed to SSKM Hospital, she was declared dead on arrival. Speaking to reporters, a grief-stricken Bhola lamented, "I have no child left. There is no meaning to my life anymore," highlighting the devastating personal toll of the tragedy.

Preliminary investigations point toward suicide, but authorities have not ruled out homicide pending a detailed post-mortem and forensic analysis. A senior police officer noted that while initial probes suggest self-inflicted harm, all possibilities remain open to ensure a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding the young girl's death. This case, intertwined with the high-profile RG Kar scandal, underscores deeper issues of child welfare and familial violence, leaving the community in shock and demanding justice.
