Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday participated in a cleanliness drive in the Azadpur area under the ‘Seva Mera Yogdan’ campaign and called for greater public participation in keeping the national capital clean. Speaking at the programme, Gupta said she had deliberately selected the location to draw attention to sanitation concerns and establish clear accountability among civic authorities responsible for maintaining the area.
Gupta said the site, located near the back gate of the Azadpur market, had repeatedly faced garbage accumulation, with different civic zones disputing responsibility for the area. She said the Keshav Puram zone had maintained that the location fell outside its jurisdiction, while the Civil Lines zone had indicated that its boundary had not begun there. Gupta said she contacted the civic commissioner to determine which authority was responsible for addressing the sanitation problem.
Emphasising the need for a systematic approach, Gupta said cleanliness efforts could not succeed unless responsibility was clearly assigned at every level. She said civic authorities needed to work consistently across different areas and identify who was responsible for specific tasks. According to Gupta, accountability was essential to ensure that sanitation problems were addressed rather than being left unresolved because of jurisdictional disputes.

The Chief Minister also pointed to improvements she said had taken place in the area over the past year. She said dust levels had reduced and road conditions had improved, adding that roads in the area had previously faced problems of sinking. Gupta credited the Public Works Department (PWD) with ensuring that the area, including Adarsh Nagar, did not face the same problem during the current season.
Gupta also shared photographs from the cleanliness drive on X and described the programme as part of the broader effort to make cleanliness a civic responsibility. She said public participation was important for strengthening the objectives of a Clean India and Clean Delhi, while several local representatives and civic officials attended the programme. The campaign coincided with Gandhi Jayanti, which is observed on October 2.
The ‘Seva Mera Yogdan’ campaign forms part of community service activities linked to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 25 years in public life. The month-long ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan’ is being observed from September 17 to October 17, while ‘Seva Pakhwada’ runs from September 17 to October 2 and traditionally focuses on service-oriented activities around the Prime Minister’s birthday and Gandhi Jayanti.
