A routine drug raid turned into a violent showdown in Budhu Barkat village, Hoshiarpur, Punjab, on the night of July 22, 2025, leaving two police officers and two villagers injured. The chaos unfolded when a Dasuya police team, led by Assistant Sub-Inspector Sarabjit Singh, responded to a drug-related complaint received via the 112 helpline. What began as a standard investigation spiraled into a fierce clash, with villagers allegedly attempting to snatch weapons from the police.
Superintendent of Police (Investigation) Dr. Mukesh Kumar reported that an argument broke out when the police sought cooperation from the villagers, some of whom were allegedly intoxicated. The situation escalated into a physical altercation, during which ASI Sarabjit Singh and a head constable sustained injuries from blunt and sharp weapons. In self-defense, the police opened fire, resulting in bullet wounds to the legs of two villagers, Bhupinder Singh and Niranjan Singh, who were promptly admitted to the Civil Hospital in Dasuya. The injured officers were also hospitalized for treatment.
Dasuya SHO Inspector Rajinder Singh stated that 30 to 35 villagers were involved in the scuffle, which saw attempts to disarm the police team. An FIR has been filed at Dasuya police station under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges for assaulting public servants, obstructing duty, and attempted murder. As investigations continue, this shocking incident has raised alarms about rising tensions in Punjab’s rural areas, leaving authorities on edge.
