A software professional in Hyderabad was booked by police after allegedly spending a significant portion of his salary on ganja and later attempting to grow cannabis at his residence, officials said on Wednesday.According to investigators, the individual, described as a techie working in the city’s IT sector, initially sourced ganja for personal consumption. Over time, his spending on the substance reportedly increased, prompting him to explore cultivating cannabis at home to sustain the habit and reduce recurring costs.
Police said the activity came to light following a tip-off, after which a search was conducted at the accused’s residence. During the operation, officers allegedly recovered cannabis plants and related materials used for indoor cultivation. The seized items have been sent for further examination as part of the investigation.
A case has been registered under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, which governs offences related to possession, consumption, and cultivation of prohibited substances. Officials indicated that the accused is being questioned to determine the extent of the activity and whether there were any links to a wider supply network.
