Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday attended the Bihar cabinet expansion ceremony at Gandhi Maidan in Patna and later held a roadshow in the city, drawing large crowds of supporters and party workers. The event marked a significant political moment for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in Bihar under Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, following the alliance’s sweeping victory in the recent Assembly elections.
During the ceremony, ministers from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Janata Dal (United), and other NDA allies were inducted into the expanded cabinet. Leaders including Shrawon Kumar, Vijay Kumar Sinha, Dilip Kumar Jaiswal, Nishant Kumar, Leshi Singh, Ram Kripal Yadav, Nitish Mishra, Damodar Rawat, Sanjay Singh alias Tiger, and Ashok Choudhary took oath as ministers. The expansion is being viewed as an effort to balance representation among alliance partners and strengthen governance ahead of the new legislative term.
The NDA secured a decisive mandate in the Bihar Assembly elections, winning 202 out of 243 seats and obtaining a commanding three-fourths majority. Within the alliance, the BJP won 89 seats while the JD(U) secured 85. Other allies, including Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular), and Rashtriya Lok Morcha, also contributed to the alliance’s overwhelming victory. In contrast, the Mahagathbandhan was reduced to 35 seats.

The cabinet expansion comes after a major political transition in the state earlier this year. Nitish Kumar, who had served as Chief Minister for over two decades, stepped down from the post and later resigned as a member of the Bihar Legislative Council on March 30. Samrat Choudhary was subsequently sworn in as Bihar’s first BJP Chief Minister, marking a historic shift in the state’s political leadership.
To maintain coalition balance, senior JD(U) leaders Vijay Kumar Choudhary and Bijendra Prasad Yadav were appointed Deputy Chief Ministers in the new arrangement. The NDA government later secured a comfortable victory in the trust vote in the Bihar Legislative Assembly, reaffirming support for Samrat Choudhary’s leadership and completing the transition of power within the alliance.
Prime Minister Modi’s participation in the swearing-in ceremony and subsequent roadshow underscored the importance of Bihar in the BJP-led NDA’s political strategy. The public events witnessed significant mobilisation of supporters, with party leaders projecting the new government as a continuation of the alliance’s development agenda and political stability in the state.
