The Indian National Congress on Friday alleged that the recently concluded US-India trade agreement reflected Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “desperation” and accused him of compromising national interests to secure a diplomatic win. Senior party leader Rahul Gandhi said the deal raised serious concerns about transparency and the protection of domestic industries.
Addressing reporters in the national capital, Gandhi claimed the agreement appeared to favour American commercial interests while placing undue pressure on Indian farmers, small manufacturers and the services sector. He questioned whether adequate safeguards had been built into the framework to shield vulnerable sectors from a sudden surge in imports. The Congress maintained that Parliament and stakeholders were not sufficiently consulted before the pact was finalised.
The trade deal, aimed at expanding bilateral commerce between India and the United States, reportedly covers tariff reductions on select goods, market access for agricultural products, and enhanced cooperation in digital trade and supply chains. Government officials have described it as a balanced arrangement designed to boost exports, attract investment, and strengthen strategic ties between the two countries.

The Congress, however, argued that the timing of the agreement suggested political considerations ahead of key electoral cycles. Gandhi alleged that the Prime Minister was eager to showcase a major international partnership, even if it meant conceding ground in sensitive areas such as agriculture and intellectual property rights. He urged the government to disclose the full text of the agreement and subject it to parliamentary scrutiny.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party rejected the Opposition’s criticism, stating that the trade pact would generate employment and position India more competitively in global markets. Party spokespersons said the agreement was the outcome of sustained negotiations and reflected India’s long-term economic interests rather than any short-term political calculus.
