In a significant breach of national security protocols uncovered in Uttar Pradesh's Rampur district, authorities have initiated a formal criminal probe against Mahira Akhtar, also known as Farzana, who is accused of infiltrating the state's Basic Education Department by deliberately suppressing her Pakistani citizenship and maintaining a government teaching position at a primary school in Kumhariya village for more than three decades through systematic deception and fraudulent documentation.
The First Information Report was formally lodged at Azim Nagar police station on January 6, 2026, prompted by an official complaint submitted by the Basic Education Department following a thorough internal verification process that exposed critical anomalies, including the submission of a counterfeit residence certificate designed to fabricate proof of Indian nationality and eligibility for public employment.
Additional Superintendent of Police Anurag Singh elaborated that the case invokes stringent provisions under sections 318(4), 336, 338, and 340 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, covering grave offenses such as cheating by personation, forgery of valuable security documents, forgery intended for cheating purposes, and the knowing use of forged instruments as authentic, reflecting the seriousness with which authorities view the alleged violation of employment and citizenship norms.

Investigative findings reveal that Mahira Akhtar entered into matrimony with a Pakistani national in 1979, consequently acquiring Pakistani citizenship through naturalization, and subsequently returned to India post-divorce utilizing a valid Pakistani passport, before entering a second marriage with an Indian resident around 1985 and securing the teaching appointment in 1992 by consistently misrepresenting herself as a bona fide Indian citizen throughout the recruitment and service tenure.
Following the conclusive exposure of her Pakistani nationality via enhanced scrutiny and cross-verification mechanisms, the Basic Education Department executed immediate suspension of her duties, culminating in her permanent dismissal from service, while law enforcement agencies proceed with meticulous evidence compilation in the active investigation phase, with no custodial arrest recorded as of January 9, 2026, amid ongoing efforts to ascertain potential broader implications.
