Delhi Police arrested notorious serial killer Devender Sharma, infamously known as ‘Doctor Death,’ on Monday from an ashram in Rajasthan’s Dausa district, where he was hiding under a false identity as a priest.
The 67-year-old Ayurveda practitioner, convicted in multiple murder cases, had been on the run since jumping parole in August 2023 while serving a life sentence in Tihar Jail.
Sharma, a Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) graduate, gained notoriety for his chilling crimes between 2002 and 2004, during which he and his accomplices murdered taxi and truck drivers, disposing of their bodies in the crocodile-infested Hazara Canal in Uttar Pradesh’s Kasganj to eliminate evidence.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Aditya Gautam revealed that Sharma was convicted in seven murder cases across Delhi, Rajasthan, and Haryana, with a Gurgaon court also sentencing him to death for one case. Police suspect he was involved in over 50 murders, with Sharma himself admitting to losing count after 50 killings.
His criminal history, spanning at least 27 cases of murder, kidnapping, and robbery, began after a financial setback in 1994 when he lost ₹11 lakh in a scam gas dealership. This led him to run a fake gas agency and later engage in an illegal kidney transplant racket from 1998 to 2004, facilitating over 125 illicit transplants across multiple states.
His gang’s modus operandi involved luring drivers for fake trips, killing them, and selling their vehicles for ₹20,000-₹25,000 each in the grey market.
Arrested in 2004 for both the kidney racket and serial killings, Sharma’s criminal career persisted even after incarceration. He previously jumped parole in January 2020, only to be caught in Delhi after seven months. In June 2023, granted parole again in a Sarita Vihar case, he absconded after August 3, 2023.
Following a six-month operation across Aligarh, Jaipur, Delhi, Agra, and Prayagraj, Delhi Police’s Crime Branch tracked him to the Dausa ashram, where he posed as a spiritual figure.
This marks the second time Sharma has been apprehended after evading authorities, highlighting his persistent attempts to elude justice. The Delhi Police’s relentless pursuit underscores their commitment to capturing fugitives, with Sharma now back in custody to face the consequences of his parole violation and extensive criminal record.
