Central Railway (CR) will introduce 12 new air-conditioned (AC) local train services on Mumbai's suburban railway network from Monday, June 29, as part of efforts to improve passenger comfort during the summer season. The new AC services will operate on the Main Line and will replace 12 existing non-AC suburban train services. The move comes in response to growing demand from commuters for more air-conditioned local trains on one of the country's busiest suburban rail networks.
With the addition of these services, the total number of AC local trains operated by Central Railway will increase to 120. Of these, 92 services will run on the Main Line, while the remaining 28 will operate on the Harbour Line. Central Railway had introduced AC local train services on the Harbour Line on January 26, 2026, marking a significant expansion of premium suburban travel options for daily commuters across Mumbai.
In an official statement, Central Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Dr. Swapnil Nila said the 12 non-AC suburban services on the Main Line would be upgraded to AC services with effect from June 29. He said the decision was taken in response to passenger demand for additional air-conditioned services and clarified that the upgraded trains would replace existing non-AC services rather than increasing the total number of trains operating on the route.
