The Meghalaya government has approached the Supreme Court challenging the bail granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi, an accused in the 2025 honeymoon murder case involving the killing of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi in Meghalaya. The appeal comes after the Meghalaya High Court upheld a lower court’s decision to grant bail, prompting the state to seek urgent intervention from the apex court.
A bench comprising Justices MM Sundresh and Sheel Nagu agreed to hear the matter on Friday after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta requested an expedited listing. The state has argued that the High Court’s decision was legally flawed and warrants immediate review given the seriousness of the allegations and the circumstances of the case.
During the hearing, the Solicitor General contended that the High Court erred in granting bail on the grounds that the reasons for Sonam Raghuvanshi’s arrest were not properly communicated at the time of detention. He argued that the issue stemmed from a clerical or typographical error in citing the relevant legal provision, and therefore should not have been treated as a substantive procedural lapse affecting the legality of the arrest.

The state further expressed concern over the possibility of the accused absconding, emphasising the gravity of the charges and the ongoing nature of the investigation. It maintained that granting bail at this stage could potentially hamper the judicial process and affect the integrity of the trial. The government’s petition seeks to have the Supreme Court overturn the High Court’s order and reinstate custody conditions.
The case originates from the disappearance and death of Raja Raghuvanshi, who had travelled to Meghalaya with his wife for their honeymoon. The couple went missing in the Sohra area on May 23, 2025, and his body was later recovered from a deep gorge on June 2. The incident triggered a high-profile investigation that has since drawn national attention.
According to police findings cited in the case, Sonam Raghuvanshi is alleged to have conspired with hired assailants to murder her husband for financial motives. The defence, however, has contested the prosecution’s claims, and the matter remains under judicial scrutiny as the Supreme Court prepares to examine whether the grant of bail should stand or be revoked.
