In a major operation, Thane police seized gutkha and banned tobacco products valued at Rs 53 lakh from a Karnataka-registered vehicle in Bhiwandi, Maharashtra, on Friday. Acting on a tip-off, the crime branch intercepted the vehicle at Narpoli toll plaza, uncovering a large stash of illegal gutkha, paan masala, and other prohibited tobacco items intended for distribution in the region.
Police inspector Mithun Bhoir, who led the operation, stated that the seizure was part of ongoing efforts to curb the illegal trade of banned substances in Maharashtra. "The vehicle was transporting these items for sale in local markets, violating state regulations," Bhoir said. The driver, identified as a resident of Karnataka, was detained, and a case has been registered under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Authorities suspect the consignment was part of a larger smuggling network operating across state borders. "We are investigating the supply chain to identify the key players involved," Bhoir added. The seizure highlights the challenges in enforcing the statewide ban on gutkha and tobacco products, which has been in place since 2012 due to health concerns.
