A Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) tanker carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) overturned in the hilly Rahud Ghat area near Chandwad, along the Mumbai-Agra national highway in Nashik district, Maharashtra. The incident, which occurred around 10 PM, led to a significant gas leak, causing widespread panic among local residents.
According to police officials, no injuries were reported. Immediate response efforts were launched, involving the Chandwad tehsildar, local police, and BPCL’s technical team, who have been working tirelessly for over 15 hours to contain the leak. Fire tenders from three municipal councils and support from Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL) were deployed to assist in the operation.
The accident caused severe traffic disruptions, with long queues of vehicles forming on the highway. As a precautionary measure, authorities closed the Nashik-Dhule highway at Chandwad Square, diverting traffic to alternate routes. Superintendent of Police Balasaheb Patil assured the public that efforts to stop the leak are ongoing, with all necessary resources in place. He urged citizens to avoid spreading rumors and cooperate with the administration, estimating that the situation would be resolved by 4 PM on September 9, 2025.
