In a stunning turn of events in Kerala’s Wayanad district, a 41-year-old man, Prasad P S, was arrested on Sunday for allegedly planting explosives and banned liquor at his neighbor’s house in Pulpally to frame him in a fabricated criminal case. The incident, which has sparked allegations of political conspiracy, has rocked the local community and raised questions about police oversight.
The saga began on August 23 when police arrested Augustine alias Thankachan, a 54-year-old resident of Marakkadavu, after discovering 20 packets of illegal liquor smuggled from Karnataka and 15 “thotta” explosives—used for illegal fish hunting—under a car on his property. Thankachan, a ward president of the Congress party, was remanded and spent 17 days in jail. However, subsequent investigation, aided by CCTV footage and mobile phone records, revealed that the contraband was planted by Prasad, driven by personal enmity.
During interrogation on Saturday, Prasad confessed to placing the items to implicate Thankachan, leading to his arrest the following day. Thankachan was released from jail after a court order, but not before accusing the police of negligence. “We told the police the explosives and liquor weren’t ours, but they arrested me without proper investigation,” he said, expressing frustration over his wrongful imprisonment. He further alleged that the case stemmed from political rivalry within the Congress party, pointing fingers at district leaders, including DCC president N D Appachan, as potential masterminds behind the plot.

Police have vowed to investigate the political angle, though Prasad has so far cited personal motives. The scandal has ignited debates about the misuse of law enforcement and the vulnerability of political figures to targeted conspiracies. As the investigation unfolds, authorities are under pressure to uncover the full extent of the scheme and ensure justice for Thankachan, whose ordeal has exposed cracks in local governance and party dynamics.
