A Civil Police Officer (CPO) in Kerala has been suspended following a complaint from a young woman alleging molestation during a routine passport verification process. The accused, identified as Vijesh from the Palluruthy Police Station in Ernakulam, is facing both criminal and departmental proceedings, with authorities treating the matter as highly serious.
According to the complaint, the woman was contacted by Vijesh as part of the official verification process. She alleged that he later asked her to visit a walkway within the Harbour Police Station limits under the pretext of completing verification procedures. It was at this location that the officer allegedly molested her, abusing his official position.
Following her complaint, the Kochi City Harbour Police registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including those relating to outraging a woman’s modesty. Senior police officials confirmed that the suspension is pending inquiry and emphasized that such behavior would not be tolerated under any circumstances, as it brings disrepute to the force.

Authorities also acknowledged that similar complaints had been raised against the officer previously, a factor likely to influence both the criminal investigation and departmental inquiry. Officials stressed that corrective action would be swift, firm, and uncompromising, highlighting the police force’s commitment to maintaining public trust.
The incident has sparked widespread criticism, as it involves the alleged misuse of authority in a citizen-facing service that relies heavily on public confidence. Officials emphasized the importance of safeguarding applicants, particularly women, during official procedures, and promised strict measures to prevent recurrence.
Police authorities assured that justice would be ensured for the complainant and reaffirmed their commitment to restoring public faith in the department. The case underscores the need for stronger oversight and accountability within police interactions with the public, especially during sensitive verification processes such as passport issuance.
