Kerala erupted in celebration as cricketer Sanju Samson emerged as the star of the recently concluded T20 World Cup, earning the Player of the Tournament award with a total of 321 runs. Samson’s journey back to form has been credited to a return to his roots and a “back-to-basics” approach, which helped him regain the poise and stability that marked his early career.

Samson’s father, Viswanath, a former Delhi Police officer, played a crucial role in shaping his mindset. After Sanju’s first IPL season with Rajasthan Royals, Viswanath noticed that young cricketers in their hometown of Vizhinjam were hesitant to approach him. Advising his son to reconnect with his old friends, he told Sanju, “Never go away from your roots.” The guidance stayed with the cricketer throughout his ups and downs.

His formative coach, Biju George, noted that Samson had regained the “stillness” in his feet, a stable base that had been disrupted in previous matches. This foundation became apparent during the semifinals against England at Kolkata, where Samson expertly handled Jofra Archer’s short-pitched deliveries, hitting two towering sixes and dismissing questions about his vulnerability against bouncers.

Heading into the knockout stages, Samson’s career appeared to hang by a thread. However, he delivered critical innings of 97, 89, and 89 runs in successive games, guiding India to their third T20 World Cup title and the first won on home soil. His performance was widely praised for its timing, consistency, and mental toughness under pressure.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir lauded Samson as a “special talent,” highlighting his courage and character. “Making a comeback after a difficult start and playing those innings with that strike rate requires a special player. He deserves far more recognition than he’s received so far,” Gambhir said, emphasizing the importance of belief and self-confidence in Samson’s resurgence.

Samson’s story, from street games in Vizhinjam to World Cup heroics, exemplifies resilience and the power of staying connected to one’s roots. His performance not only cemented his place among India’s cricketing elite but also inspired young athletes across Kerala and the country to pursue excellence with humility and focus.
