The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) imposed a staggering Rs 102 crore fine on Kannada film actress Ranya Rao in connection with a gold smuggling case. The actress, step-daughter of Director General of Police rank officer K Ramachandra Rao, was apprehended on March 3 at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru upon her arrival from Dubai, carrying 14.8 kg of gold. Three other individuals involved in the case were also fined over Rs 50 crore each.
DRI officials served a comprehensive 2,500-page penalty notice to Rao and her co-accused, who are currently detained in Bengaluru Central Jail. The hefty fines underscore the severity of the smuggling operation, which has drawn significant attention due to Rao’s prominence in the Kannada film industry and her familial ties to a senior police official. The case highlights the DRI’s ongoing efforts to curb illegal gold trafficking through India’s international airports.
The investigation revealed that the smuggling attempt involved sophisticated coordination, prompting authorities to issue substantial penalties to deter such activities. As the legal proceedings continue, the case has sparked public interest and raised questions about the involvement of high-profile individuals in illicit operations.
The DRI’s decisive action reflects its commitment to enforcing stringent measures against smuggling networks operating in Karnataka and beyond.
