A 40-year-old Indian-origin man has been arrested in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a young woman at Bear Creek Park in Surrey, police said. The accused, identified as Jagendar Kurana, faces charges of sexual assault and sexual interference under Canada’s Criminal Code. The incident was reported to police on August 9 after the woman told authorities that an adult man had groped her before fleeing the area.
According to the Surrey Police Service, officers responded to the report and carried out extensive patrols of Bear Creek Park and nearby areas in an effort to locate the suspect. However, the man was not found immediately. Police said the victim was not physically injured during the alleged attack, while investigators continued efforts to identify the person responsible based on the description provided by the woman.
The victim described the suspect as a South Asian male who was approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall. At the time of the alleged incident, he was reportedly wearing a blue Adidas toque, a black T-shirt, black pants and black flip-flops. Police later released photographs and appealed to members of the public for information that could help identify the individual and advance the investigation.

The investigation subsequently led police to a man matching the description provided by the victim. Kurana was arrested on August 12, according to the Surrey Police Service. His arrest came several days after the reported incident and followed police efforts to locate the suspect through patrols, investigative work and a public appeal for information.
Following the arrest, Kurana was remanded in custody. The British Columbia Prosecution Service subsequently approved two charges under the Criminal Code — one count of sexual assault and one count of sexual interference. Police said Kurana was awaiting a bail hearing as the legal proceedings moved forward.
The Surrey Police Service said the investigation remains ongoing and urged anyone with relevant information to assist investigators. The allegations against Kurana have not been established in court, and he remains entitled to due process. Police have not disclosed further details about the alleged encounter or the identity of the woman involved.
