A Bureau of Immigration official at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad has been booked for allegedly stalking a 24-year-old Sri Lankan woman during her transit halt on August 3. The woman, an undergraduate music student at a Chhattisgarh-based institution, filed a complaint with the RGIA police, accusing the official of harassing her with persistent calls and urging her to leave the airport with him.
The incident occurred around 5 PM when the student, arriving from Colombo on IndiGo flight 6E-1182, handed her immigration form to the official. According to her complaint, he inquired if she was alone, provided his phone number for “assistance,” and later called her at 6:22 PM, pressuring her to meet him in the airport car park to “see the city” or rest in a private room. Distressed, she contacted a friend who advised her to alert the police. She lodged a written complaint early Monday, leading to a case under Section 78(1)(i) (stalking) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Police have identified the official through his mobile number and are collecting evidence to verify the allegations. The case has sparked concerns about passenger safety and oversight at RGIA, with authorities promising a thorough investigation. The incident echoes past complaints against immigration officials, raising questions about training and accountability at India’s international airports.
