A 37-year-old Imam, Imtiaz Ahmed, from Chikwan Ka Purwa, Kasia, in Kaushambi district, Uttar Pradesh, has been charged by police for allegedly hoisting an Islamic flag above the national tricolour atop a mosque’s minaret in Muratganj town.
The incident, reported on August 31, 2025, in the Sandipan Ghat Police Station area, has sparked controversy for violating the sanctity of the national flag, an act deemed disrespectful under Indian law.
According to Chail Circle Officer Abhishek Singh, the issue came to light during a routine patrol by Muratganj outpost in-charge, Sub-Inspector Ajit Singh. The officer observed that the Islamic flag was positioned higher than the tricolour on the mosque’s minaret, an act considered to diminish the dignity and honor of the national flag. The Islamic flag was promptly removed by authorities to address the violation.
Following a written complaint by Sub-Inspector Singh, a case was registered against Imam Imtiaz Ahmed under Section 2 of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971. The legal action underscores the importance of upholding the respect and protocol associated with the national flag, as investigations continue to address the circumstances surrounding the incident.
