An Illinois mother has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of her two-year-old son, after police responded to a report of an unresponsive child at a home in Frankfort. Corie Walsh, 40, is accused of killing her son Barrett Walsh, who was later pronounced dead at a hospital. The case has attracted additional attention because Walsh had reportedly been closely following the murder trial of Massachusetts mother Lindsay Clancy.

According to prosecutors and court documents cited in reports, police and emergency responders were called to the residence after the toddler was found unresponsive. A neighbour attempted to provide first aid before emergency personnel arrived and transported the child to hospital. The toddler was pronounced dead later that afternoon. Authorities have not indicated that Walsh's other three children were harmed in the incident.

Prosecutors allege that Walsh later attempted to take her own life at the residence and was found injured. She was taken to hospital for treatment, with her injuries described as non-life-threatening. Authorities have alleged that Walsh made disturbing statements about her son and claimed that she believed he was the "devil" and the "anti-Christ." These statements form part of the prosecution's account, while the circumstances surrounding her mental state remain a key issue in the case.

Walsh's attorney, Andrea Lyon, said the incident occurred while her client was experiencing what she described as a psychotic episode. Any determination regarding her mental condition or criminal responsibility will ultimately depend on the evidence presented during the legal proceedings.

The case has also drawn attention because Walsh had reportedly been following the Lindsay Clancy trial, which was taking place more than 1,000 miles away. Prosecutors said witnesses told them that Walsh had been discussing the case with friends through a group text message shortly before the incident. Clancy is accused in a separate case involving the deaths of her children, making the connection between the two cases a significant part of the reporting surrounding Walsh's arrest.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Barrett's death, while Walsh faces the first-degree murder charge in court. The allegations against her have not been established as facts unless proven in court. Her reported mental-health condition and the events leading up to the child's death are expected to remain central to the legal proceedings as prosecutors and the defence present their respective accounts.
