The Telangana Police have registered a case after a Hyderabad-based businessman alleged that a US-based investor submitted forged financial documents, resulting in the collapse of his company's bid to secure broadcasting rights for the FIFA World Cup 2026. The complaint was filed with the Central Crime Station (CCS) by Pritish Kollati, Managing Director of Metalloid Productions Private Ltd, who accused multiple individuals of cheating, forgery and the use of forged documents.

According to the complaint, Kollati alleged that US-based businessman Deelip Mhaske, also known as Sam Mhaske, and others submitted fabricated financial records during the process of pursuing the broadcasting rights. He claimed the alleged actions undermined his company's bid and caused significant financial and business losses. Kollati further alleged that the investor claimed to have "close associations" with US President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino while presenting himself as capable of facilitating the deal.

Based on the complaint, the Telangana Police have registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including offences related to cheating, forgery and the use of forged documents. The registration of the case marks the beginning of a formal investigation into the allegations, with police expected to examine the documents submitted and record statements from the parties involved.

Investigators are likely to verify the authenticity of the financial documents cited in the complaint and determine whether any misrepresentation or fraudulent activity occurred during the negotiations for the broadcasting rights. The FIFA World Cup is among the world's most valuable sporting properties, with broadcasting rights attracting substantial commercial interest from media companies and investors globally. Bidding for such rights typically involves detailed financial scrutiny, contractual obligations and compliance with strict documentation requirements established by rights holders.

The allegations made in the complaint have not been established in court, and the investigation remains at a preliminary stage. Police have not announced any arrests in connection with the case, and the accused will have an opportunity to present their defence as the legal process moves forward.
