A tragic accident in Salt Lake, near Kolkata, claimed the life of 24-year-old food delivery boy Rahul Mondal, who was burnt to death after his motorcycle was struck by a private car and caught fire on Wednesday evening.
The collision, which occurred near New Bridge, involved the car hitting multiple vehicles before slamming into Mondal’s bike, trapping him against railings as flames engulfed him. Several others were injured and hospitalized, while the incident ignited public outrage, with locals staging a protest and allegedly pelting stones at police, prompting officers from the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate to deploy tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Witnesses accused the police of failing to act swiftly to rescue Mondal, claiming traffic officers at the scene were passive, merely taking photos instead of intervening. A local resident, speaking to PTI, alleged, “Policemen did nothing to rescue the man... Police are solely responsible for this accident.” The community’s frustration was fueled by claims of rampant traffic violations in the area, with residents arguing that lax enforcement contributed to the tragedy. Locals also took matters into their own hands, dragging the car’s passengers out of the vehicle, though they could not save Mondal.
The situation remains tense in Salt Lake, with several policemen reportedly injured during the unrest. A senior officer from the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate stated, “The situation is under control, and we are investigating the matter.” The incident has spotlighted concerns over road safety and police responsiveness in Kolkata, with calls for stricter traffic enforcement and accountability growing louder as the community mourns the loss of a young life in such harrowing circumstances.
