Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Guwahati, Assam, suspended two senior doctors and three staff members in response to the tragic death of a four-day-old infant in the facility’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) on August 18. The infant, born at GMCH and admitted to the NICU for treatment of infections and jaundice, was found hanging from the wires of medical equipment, prompting widespread outrage and an immediate investigation.
Following a detailed inquiry, GMCH Superintendent Devajit Choudhury announced that the suspensions were based on the findings of an inquiry committee. The suspended individuals include Dr. Anupama Deka, head of the paediatric department, Dr. Dipankar Hazarika, an associate professor, staff nurses Chandana Nath and Gomti Devi, and ICU technician Ishan Jyoti Talukdar.
Additionally, departmental inquiries have been initiated against these five individuals to further investigate their roles in the incident. Two trainee doctors, Hrishikesh Thakuria and Pooja, have been rusticated from GMCH for six months.
The suspensions and ongoing inquiries reflect the hospital’s commitment to addressing allegations of negligence and ensuring accountability. The incident has raised serious concerns about patient safety and oversight in the NICU, with authorities vowing to implement stricter measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
