A violent extortion racket in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, led to two shops being set ablaze after their owners refused to pay hefty demands, police reported on August 22, 2025. The incidents, which occurred in Katra village, have sparked outrage, with five individuals, including members of a local political family, now facing charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The chaos began on Tuesday evening when Shashank Verma allegedly visited Khatu Shyam Confectionery on Nainital Road around 9:45 pm. According to shop owner Rajeev Kumar, Shashank took items without paying, hurled abuses when confronted about pending dues, and threatened to return with his brother, Mayank Verma. Police intervened briefly, but tensions escalated. On Wednesday morning, Mayank, along with associates Chetak, Arpit, and others, allegedly set the confectionery shop on fire. Rajeev’s brother, Mukesh, who attempted to intervene, was brutally attacked with sticks and knives, sustaining head injuries.
In a separate but related incident, Pritam Singh, owner of Vishal Medical Store in the same area, reported a terrifying ordeal. On Tuesday at 6:30 am, Mayank and Shashank, accompanied by others, allegedly demanded Rs 5 lakh from him. When Singh refused, Mayank attacked him with a sharp weapon, and Shashank fired a shot from a country-made pistol, narrowly missing Singh’s head. Villagers rushed to his aid, forcing the assailants to flee.

Devarniya Police Station’s SHO Navdeep Singh confirmed that two FIRs have been filed against Shashank Verma, Mayank Verma, Chetak, Mayank (son of Girwar Dayal), and Arpit. The accused, currently absconding, face charges for arson, assault, and extortion. “Legal action is underway, and we are actively pursuing the suspects,” Singh stated.
The attacks have left Katra village reeling, with residents demanding swift justice. “This is pure thuggery,” said Anil Sharma, a local shopkeeper. “We can’t run businesses under such threats.” As police intensify their search, the incidents highlight the growing menace of extortion-driven violence in the region.
