Thane police seized 2.184 kg of mephedrone (MD), a synthetic stimulant worth ₹3.97 crore, and arrested two men in separate operations targeting narcotics trafficking, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Amarsingh Jadhav announced.
In the first bust on July 27, the Anti-Narcotics Squad, acting on a tip-off, apprehended Irfan Amanullah Sheikh (36), a food delivery agent for a prominent firm, near Diva village in Ulwe, Raigad district. Sheikh was caught with 1.522 kg of MD, valued at ₹3.04 crore, intended for sale. He was charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, at Shil Daighar Police Station and remanded to custody for interrogation to trace the drug’s source.
In a second operation on July 24, Crime Branch Unit-1 intercepted Shahrukh Sattar Mewasi alias Rizwan (28), a mason from Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh, on the Bhiwandi-Mumbai channel road in Kalwa. Police recovered 662 grams of mephedrone, worth ₹92.68 lakh, from his vehicle. Mewasi, suspected to be part of an inter-state trafficking network, was also remanded to custody until July 30. Investigations are ongoing to uncover his connections and the drug supply route to Thane.
The combined seizures highlight Thane police’s aggressive crackdown on drug networks. “We are targeting all links in the chain—from couriers to dealers to suppliers,” Jadhav stated, emphasizing their commitment to eradicating the drug menace. The operations follow a surge in narcotics-related arrests in Maharashtra, with Thane emerging as a key hub for MD trafficking due to its proximity to Mumbai. Authorities are intensifying efforts to dismantle syndicates, with further probes aimed at identifying suppliers and preventing future smuggling.
