In a tragic incident at Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital in Bihar , 25-year-old nursing student Rahul Kumar was fatally shot by his wife’s father, Premshankar Jha, in a suspected honor killing over their inter-caste marriage.
The second-year BSc (Nursing) student was shot at point-blank range in front of his wife, Tannu Priya, a first-year nursing student, who recounted the horrifying moment: “My father approached Rahul in a hoodie, pulled out a gun, and shot him in the chest as he fell into my lap.” Tannu alleged her entire family conspired against the couple, who had married four months ago despite her family’s disapproval and had previously sought court protection, fearing harm.
Following the shooting, enraged hostel students attacked Jha, who was hospitalized and later referred to Patna Medical College and Hospital for treatment. Chaos erupted as police struggled to control the crowd demanding justice.
Darbhanga District Magistrate Kaushal Kumar and Senior Superintendent of Police Jagannath Reddy intervened to restore order. Reddy confirmed a case will be registered, with investigations underway to address the murder and the subsequent unrest, highlighting tensions surrounding inter-caste unions in the region.
