Retired Judge Giribala Singh was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday in connection with the death of her daughter-in-law Twisha Sharma, after the Madhya Pradesh High Court quashed the anticipatory bail earlier granted to her.
The arrest came a day after the High Court set aside the bail order issued by a trial court in Bhopal, observing that the lower court had not adequately examined the evidence and had failed to properly consider the seriousness of the allegations. The court also cited repeated allegations against the accused and concerns over lack of cooperation during the investigation.
Twisha Sharma was found dead on May 12, following which an FIR was registered on May 15. On the same day, a Bhopal trial court had granted interim anticipatory bail to her mother-in-law, even as investigation in the case continued. Her husband, Samarth Singh, remains in CBI custody in connection with the ongoing probe.

Justice Devanarayan Mishra, while hearing the matter, quashed the anticipatory bail granted to Giribala Singh under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961. The court held that the earlier order did not reflect a proper judicial assessment of the material placed before it and noted the gravity of the alleged offences.
Following the High Court’s ruling, the CBI moved swiftly to take Giribala Singh into custody on Thursday afternoon. The case, which involves allegations linked to dowry harassment and suspicious circumstances surrounding Twisha Sharma’s death, has been under close judicial and investigative scrutiny since its registration.
Meanwhile, Twisha Sharma’s father, Navnidhi Sharma, welcomed the court’s decision and expressed gratitude to the judiciary for intervening in the matter. Speaking to ANI, he said the ruling marked an important step toward justice and expressed confidence in the ongoing CBI investigation, stating that he believed the truth would ultimately come to light through due process.
