A horrific accident rocked Jurudand village in Chhattisgarh’s Jashpur district late Tuesday night when an SUV, driven by an inebriated man, crashed into a religious procession, killing three people and injuring 22 others. The tragedy occurred on the Bagicha-Jashpur road during the ongoing Ganpati festival, as over 100 locals participated in a procession for the immersion of Lord Ganesh’s idol, according to Jashpur Senior Superintendent of Police Shashi Mohan Singh.
The victims, identified as Vipin Prajapati (17), Arvind Kerketta (19), and Khirovati Yadav (32), died instantly at the scene. Among the 22 injured, several are in critical condition and have been shifted to Ambikapur Medical College in neighboring Surguja district for advanced treatment. Others are receiving care at a local community health center. The crash has left the close-knit community in shock, with families mourning the sudden loss during what was meant to be a joyous celebration.
Police swiftly arrested the driver, Sukhsagar Vaishnav (40), who was found to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. The SUV has been seized, and a case has been registered as authorities continue their investigation. “The driver’s reckless behavior has caused an unimaginable tragedy,” Singh said, emphasizing the need for stricter enforcement against drunk driving.
