In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, Tripura Police seized 1.1 lakh banned Yaba tablets, valued at Rs 5.5 crore, from a hotel in Agartala on Friday, arresting three individuals in the operation.
The raid, conducted at Woodland Park Hotel in the Moth Chowmohani area, was executed by a team from East Agartala Police Station following a tip-off about narcotics smuggling. The seizure marks one of the largest drug busts in the state in recent months, underscoring Tripura’s escalating role as a transit point in the regional drug trade.
Led by SDPO (Sadar) and the Officer-in-Charge of East Agartala Police Station, the police recovered a trolley bag containing 11 yellow plastic packets, each holding 10,000 Yaba tablets, along with Rs 1,600 in cash and three smartphones. West Tripura Superintendent of Police, Dr. Kiran Kumar K, briefed reporters, stating, “We acted swiftly on secret intelligence.
The mastermind, Sadul Hussain Talukdar from Assam, is a notorious drug dealer. The other two, Nayan Mani NamaSudhra from Khowai and Biswajit Biswas from Dhalai, were also detained.” The trio faces charges under Sections 22(C), 27(A), and 29 of the NDPS Act.
Yaba, a mix of methamphetamine and caffeine, is a highly addictive synthetic drug banned in India due to its severe health risks and links to organized crime. Authorities suspect the consignment originated from Assam, a known hub in the narcotics network feeding India’s Northeast. The arrested individuals are in custody, with police seeking remand to unravel the broader smuggling ring.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha praised the operation, calling it “another stride towards a Nasha Mukt Tripura.” The seizure highlights the state’s intensified efforts to combat the growing drug menace in the region.
