Aalleged gang rape at South Asian University (SAU) in south Delhi, of an 18-year-old BTech first-year student, who accused four unidentified men, including a campus security guard, of sexual assault on Sunday evening, has exposed severe security and administrative lapses. According to the FIR filed with Delhi Police, the victim endured a terrifying ordeal involving threatening emails, morphed obscene photographs, and an attempt to force her to consume what she identified as an abortion pill. The case, registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including gang rape (Section 70) and kidnapping (Section 140(3)), has prompted a high-priority investigation.
The victim's ordeal began with threatening emails received over two to three days, demanding she meet at specific campus locations, such as near the guest house at 11:27 p.m. on Saturday and outside her hostel the following day. On Sunday, the threats escalated with morphed obscene images of her, sent via WhatsApp and Telegram, accompanied by warnings to circulate them among students unless she appeared at Gate Number 3.
Distressed and unable to contact her friends, she took a secluded route to the university’s under-construction convocation center, where a security guard allegedly summoned a middle-aged man and two younger accomplices. The group forced her into an empty room, where she was assaulted, with one attacker attempting to force a pill into her mouth, which she spat out, while others restrained her and issued chilling threats.
The assault ended when the assailants fled upon hearing voices from a nearby mess, leaving the victim traumatized near the campus theater, where friends later found her. The FIR details a disturbing response from SAU’s administration, with the hostel in-charge allegedly dismissing her account, blaming female students, and advising her to “take a bath and change clothes” instead of seeking immediate medical or police assistance.
The victim further alleged that officials blocked her from contacting her mother or showing her bruises via video call, exacerbating her distress. A friend’s PCR call on Monday afternoon led to police intervention, with a female sub-inspector providing counseling before the victim’s statement was recorded post-medical examination at Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ankit Chauhan confirmed that the investigation is being conducted with utmost sensitivity, with teams analyzing CCTV footage to identify the suspects, who remain at large. The case has sparked protests by student groups, including NSUI and ABVP, demanding accountability and enhanced campus security.
SAU, a SAARC-funded international institution, issued a statement affirming its zero-tolerance policy on sexual violence, but allegations of administrative negligence have fueled public outrage. The Ministry of External Affairs has sought a detailed report, as the case raises urgent questions about student safety and institutional responsibility in India’s higher education system.
