Unidentified robbers struck the Nizamabad-Tirupati Rayalaseema Express (Train No. 12794) in a brazen heist near Gooty, Anantapur district, looting passengers in the early hours of Tuesday.
The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. when the train halted on the outskirts of Gooty to allow the Shalimar-Vasco-da-Gama Amaravati Express to pass. Seizing the opportunity, the robbers stormed 10 sleeper coaches, threatening passengers at knifepoint and snatching gold ornaments, cash, and valuables, including an estimated 20 tola of gold.
Panic gripped the train as the robbers executed their swift operation before fleeing into the night. At least 20 passengers filed complaints with Tirupati Railway Police upon arrival, prompting the registration of a case and an ongoing investigation.

Authorities suspect the involvement of organized gangs, possibly linked to groups from Bihar or Chennai, known for targeting long-distance trains at night.
The heist echoes a similar robbery on April 2, when miscreants tampered with signals to stop the Chandigarh-Madurai Express in Nellore district, looting gold chains and cash. Passengers have voiced alarm over recurring incidents, demanding enhanced security from railway authorities.
Reports indicate robbers often exploit signal stops or tamper with tracks, as seen in past cases in Anantapur, where the notorious Pardhi gang from Maharashtra was implicated. The Railway Police are intensifying efforts to apprehend the culprits and prevent further attacks on vulnerable routes.
