A Delhi court has sentenced Raju Kumar Singh to four years of rigorous imprisonment in connection with a 2018 celebratory firing incident at a farmhouse in South Delhi that resulted in the death of Archana Gupta. The court also directed the accused to pay ₹25 lakh as compensation to the husband of the deceased, marking the culmination of a prolonged legal battle stemming from the New Year’s Eve tragedy.
The order was pronounced by Special Judge Vishal Gogne of the Rouse Avenue Courts, who had earlier convicted Singh in the case. The court’s sentencing came after hearing detailed arguments on the quantum of punishment, where both prosecution and defence presented submissions regarding aggravating and mitigating circumstances. The case relates to an incident in which celebratory gunfire allegedly went wrong during a gathering in 2018, leading to the fatal shooting of a 45-year-old woman.
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred at a farmhouse in South Delhi during New Year celebrations when multiple rounds of gunfire were discharged in the air. One of the bullets allegedly struck Archana Gupta, causing fatal injuries. The case remained under trial for several years, with the court examining witness statements, forensic evidence, and circumstances surrounding the firing before arriving at the conviction last month.

During the sentencing hearing, Singh’s counsel urged the court to take a lenient view, arguing that the incident was unintentional and stemmed from a “lack of scientific knowledge.” The defence contended that Singh could not have anticipated the parabolic trajectory of the bullet fired into the air during celebrations. However, the prosecution opposed any leniency, stressing that the act involved reckless handling of firearms in a public gathering, resulting in an avoidable loss of life.
The court, while pronouncing the sentence, also ordered compensation of ₹25 lakh to be paid to the husband of the deceased, recognising the loss suffered by the victim’s family. The judge observed that celebratory firing incidents reflect a serious disregard for public safety and cannot be excused on grounds of ignorance or negligence. The ruling reinforces judicial scrutiny of such incidents, which have repeatedly raised concerns across the country regarding illegal or irresponsible use of firearms during social events.
The case originates from a New Year’s Eve celebration in 2018, when guests had gathered at a private farmhouse in South Delhi. What began as a festive gathering reportedly turned tragic after gunshots were fired into the air, one of which struck the victim. The incident led to a criminal case being registered, followed by a lengthy investigation and trial process spanning several years before culminating in conviction and sentencing.
The court’s decision has once again highlighted the legal consequences of celebratory firing, an issue that authorities have consistently warned against due to its deadly potential. Law enforcement agencies have previously issued advisories cautioning against the use of firearms in celebrations, noting that even shots fired in the air can cause fatal injuries upon descent. The judgment is expected to serve as a deterrent in similar cases involving reckless firearm use.
With the sentencing now complete, Raju Kumar Singh will serve his prison term unless challenged in a higher court. The ruling also brings renewed attention to the broader debate on accountability of public representatives in criminal cases and the need for stricter enforcement of firearm safety regulations during public and private gatherings.
