In a stunning courtroom revelation, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta exposed a fake but verified X (formerly Twitter) account impersonating the “Supreme Court of Karnataka” during proceedings at the Karnataka High Court on Friday. The Centre used the fake account to highlight how easily online platforms can be exploited to mislead millions of users.
Mehta demonstrated how anyone could create such an account and post false information, potentially fooling lakhs into believing it’s an official judicial voice. This eye-opening example came amid the ongoing legal battle between the Centre and social media giant X Corp over government-issued content takedown orders.
The case raises critical questions about online anonymity, digital accountability, and the limits of current IT laws. While X Corp’s lawyers strongly objected to the evidence, the court acknowledged the urgent need to address the growing misuse of social media platforms.
