A staff member deployed at an election monitoring centre in Chennai has been arrested for allegedly watching a pirated version of actor Vijay’s upcoming film Jana Nayagan inside a CCTV control room, officials said. The incident took place at the Anna University counting centre, where Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were stored under strict security following the completion of polling for the Assembly elections.
According to police, the accused, identified as Yuvaraj (36), was working as a CCTV technical head on a contractual basis and had been recruited through the Election Commission system. He is alleged to have accessed the pirated film on a laptop while on duty inside the surveillance control room, a space meant exclusively for monitoring election security arrangements.
The matter came to light after Yuvaraj reportedly shared a photograph on Facebook showing multiple CCTV feeds running in the background, along with a laptop screen displaying the film Jana Nayagan. The post quickly went viral, triggering concerns over security protocol violations at a sensitive election-related facility.

Following a complaint filed by a Chennai Corporation official, police initiated an inquiry into the incident. During the investigation, authorities found that the accused had allegedly watched the pirated version of the film on the 23rd, before EVMs were moved into the strong room at the facility. Officials are also examining how he accessed the copyrighted content while on duty.
The accused, a native of Thiruvarur district, has been arrested by the Kotturpuram police. A case has been registered under provisions of the Information Technology Act and other relevant sections related to breach of duty and security protocol violations. Investigators are also probing whether he watched the full film and identifying the source of the pirated copy.
Jana Nayagan has not yet received certification amid ongoing legal issues involving its production and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Earlier, multiple arrests were made in connection with leaks of the film online, including individuals allegedly involved in circulating its pirated versions. Authorities said the investigation into the latest incident is ongoing.
