The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the probe into the death of 33-year-old actress and former model Twisha Sharma, who was found hanged at her husband’s residence in Bhopal. The agency registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Dowry Prohibition Act following allegations of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide.
According to the FIR filed by the CBI on May 25, 2026, Twisha’s mother-in-law, Giribala Singh, a retired district judge, allegedly demanded ₹2 lakh from the bride’s family during the vidai ceremony after the marriage on December 9, 2025. The family reportedly paid the amount, yet physical and mental harassment over further dowry demands continued, the complaint states. Twisha was discovered hanging at the residence, triggering immediate suspicions of foul play.
Her husband, Samarth Singh, reportedly fled the scene and remained untraceable for 10 days before being located. During questioning, Samarth denied physically assaulting Twisha and claimed she suffered from Bipolar Disorder and adjustment disorder, for which she had been taken to a doctor. The Singh family has attributed her death to drug-related issues, a claim strongly contested by Twisha’s family.

Medical findings have added complexity to the investigation. The initial post-mortem confirmed antemortem hanging but also noted multiple injury marks on her body consistent with assault or blows from a heavy object. Citing concerns over possible lapses in the local examination, Twisha’s family approached the Madhya Pradesh High Court, which ordered a second autopsy by an independent team from AIIMS Delhi.
The case has drawn the attention of the Supreme Court, which took suo motu cognisance amid allegations of institutional bias due to the accused family’s judicial connections. A bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant recently reprimanded both families for excessive media interactions and urged media houses to exercise restraint and avoid sensationalism while the CBI continues its investigation.
The development has raised broader questions about the influence of family background in sensitive cases and the protection of women’s safety within marriages. The CBI team is currently in Bhopal, gathering evidence and recording statements as the probe progresses.
