US President Donald Trump on Thursday announced that he was renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America” for US federal use, prompting an immediate pushback from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Democratic governor of New York. The announcement adds another point of tension to already strained US-Canada relations, with the two countries engaged in a broader dispute over trade and tariffs. Trump made the announcement in the Oval Office, telling reporters that the name of the lake would be changed “effective immediately”. He said the idea of calling it the “Lake of America” was something he had been considering for a long time. Lake Ontario is one of North America's five Great Lakes and lies along the border between the United States and Canada.

The executive order applies specifically to the US federal government's use of the name and does not have the authority to determine what Canada, international organisations or other entities call the lake. The body of water has been known as Lake Ontario for more than 400 years, making Trump's announcement largely a matter of US federal terminology rather than an internationally binding geographical renaming. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the change, signalling that Canada would continue using the established name. New York Governor Kathy Hochul also indicated that the state would not adopt Trump's proposed terminology. New York borders Lake Ontario on the US side, making the governor's response particularly relevant to how the name is used locally.

The disagreement over the lake's name comes at a particularly difficult moment in relations between Washington and Ottawa. Trump and Canadian officials have been locked in a dispute over tariffs affecting tens of billions of dollars in cross-border trade. The trade conflict has created pressure on businesses and policymakers in both countries while adding to longstanding debates over economic ties between the neighbours. The latest development follows the collapse of trade talks between the United States and Canada last week. The negotiations had involved three days of intensive discussions, but the talks ended without an agreement.
