Heavy firing was reported along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri sector on Friday night, with Indian security forces claiming to have foiled a suspected infiltration attempt from across the border. The incident marked the first major ceasefire violation along the LoC since Operation Sindoor, according to officials. Officials said unprovoked firing from the Pakistani side began around 9.50 pm, following which Indian Army troops deployed along the border responded.
The exchange of fire continued for nearly two hours, as security forces maintained a strong position to counter any possible threat from across the LoC. The firing reportedly took place after Indian troops noticed suspicious movement near the border area. Following the detection, soldiers retaliated and took necessary measures to prevent any possible infiltration attempt. Officials said there were no reports of casualties on either side during the exchange.
A search operation was launched by security forces on Saturday morning to verify whether any infiltrators had managed to cross into Indian territory. The area remained under heightened surveillance, with troops maintaining additional alertness along the sensitive border sector. The latest incident is being viewed as a significant escalation compared with previous minor violations along the LoC. Officials noted that before this incident, only limited firing incidents involving around eight to 10 rounds had been reported since Operation Sindoor.

Security analysts said the cross-border firing could be linked to attempts to create distractions and increase pressure along the border. They suggested that such incidents often serve as a means to divert attention from internal challenges, though official agencies have not attributed a specific motive behind the firing. The LoC in Jammu and Kashmir has remained a sensitive zone, with security forces regularly monitoring movements and preventing infiltration attempts by militant groups.
Despite periods of relative calm following the ceasefire understanding between India and Pakistan, occasional violations continue to raise security concerns. The Indian Army and local security agencies are continuing their operations in the region to ensure border security and prevent any infiltration attempts. Further details are expected after the completion of the search operation and assessment of the situation on the ground.
