Kerala Police on Wednesday seized a large cache of explosives concealed beneath a consignment of watermelons during a vehicle check on a national highway in Palakkad district, triggering a major security alert and an ongoing investigation into illegal transportation of hazardous materials. The seizure was made after police intercepted a pickup van during routine checks on the Walayar–Vadakkenchery stretch of the highway.
On inspection, officers discovered boxes of explosive material hidden under crates of watermelons, apparently intended to evade detection. Bomb disposal and explosives experts were immediately called in to secure the consignment and assess potential risks. Preliminary inquiries indicate that the explosives included a significant quantity of gelatin sticks along with detonators, materials commonly used for blasting in quarrying and construction but strictly regulated under law. Police said the transportation appeared to violate mandatory safety norms and licensing requirements governing the movement of explosive substances across state borders.

The driver of the vehicle, a resident of Tamil Nadu, was taken into custody for questioning. Investigators are examining where the explosives originated, their intended destination, and whether they were meant for authorised industrial use or diverted for illegal purposes. Officials are also verifying documents produced by the driver and probing possible links to suppliers or intermediaries involved in the consignment.
A case is being registered under relevant provisions of the Explosive Substances Act and other applicable laws. Authorities said further arrests cannot be ruled out as the investigation progresses and supply chains are traced. Police also confirmed that there was no immediate threat to the public, as the explosives were safely secured following standard operating procedures.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over the misuse of agricultural transport routes to smuggle prohibited or dangerous materials. Law enforcement agencies have stepped up highway surveillance in border districts, stressing that stringent checks will continue to prevent illegal movement of explosives and ensure public safety.
