A man was detained by security personnel after live bullets were reportedly discovered during routine screening at the venue of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s swearing-in ceremony in Guwahati on Tuesday, officials said. The incident occurred at the entrance of the Veterinary College Field in Khanapara, where the oath-taking ceremony of the newly formed Assam government was being held. The venue had been placed under multi-layered security arrangements given the presence of senior political leaders, dignitaries, and large public turnout for the high-profile event.
According to police officials, the man was intercepted during standard frisking and baggage checks conducted before entry into the secured perimeter. During the screening process, security personnel reportedly recovered live ammunition from his possession. However, officials clarified that no firearm or weapon was found on him at the time of detention. Following the recovery, the individual was immediately taken into custody and shifted to Basistha police station for further questioning. Authorities have not yet disclosed the identity of the man, citing ongoing verification procedures. Police said preliminary interrogation is underway to determine the source of the ammunition and the purpose behind its possession.
Law enforcement officials stated that an investigation has been launched to assess whether the incident poses any security threat or was an isolated violation. They are also examining whether the accused had any prior criminal record or links that could be relevant to the case. At this stage, officials have not indicated any direct threat to the Chief Minister or the ceremony itself.A senior police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that all security protocols were being strictly followed at the venue and that the situation was quickly brought under control after the recovery of the bullets. “The individual was detained during screening. We are investigating the circumstances under which live ammunition was found with him,” the officer said.

Despite the brief security alert, the swearing-in ceremony proceeded as planned without any disruption. Himanta Biswa Sarma was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at the Khanapara Veterinary Ground, marking the beginning of his second consecutive term as Chief Minister of Assam.
The event had witnessed elaborate arrangements, including multiple security checkpoints, restricted entry zones, and deployment of police and paramilitary personnel across the venue and surrounding areas.
Officials said these measures were part of standard protocol for events involving top constitutional authorities and large public gatherings. Authorities have said that further details will emerge once the investigation progresses. The focus of the inquiry remains on determining how the live bullets were brought into a high-security zone and whether there was any deliberate intent or negligence involved. Police are expected to complete initial questioning and evidence verification before deciding on further legal action against the detained individual.
