The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Kerala has signalled it will leverage the ongoing Sabarimala gold theft case as a central theme in its campaign for the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections, describing the controversy as a “golden opportunity” to connect with voters in numerous constituencies across the state. The party believes the issue resonates strongly with devotees and the general electorate, particularly on matters of accountability and religious sentiment.
BJP state leadership, including Kerala BJP president Rajeev Chandrasekhar, has initiated grassroots‑oriented activities focused on the case, such as petition drives addressed to local Legislative Assembly members and house‑to‑house signature collection campaigns demanding that the probe be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Although the party has not launched a formal statewide campaign specifically on the issue, it aims to sustain public attention on the scandal throughout the election period, estimating that it could influence voter sentiment in at least 35 constituencies.
The BJP’s approach reflects a broader strategy to hold the incumbent Left Democratic Front (LDF) government to account over perceived governance failures related to the management of the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) and temple administration. Party leaders have also linked the gold theft row to other contentious matters, including the longstanding debate over women’s entry to Sabarimala, indicating that the issue will be woven into their campaign narrative under the slogan of “Faith Protection, Developed and Safe Keralam.”

Opposition fronts in Kerala have already been using the gold scandal as a political tool; both the BJP and the United Democratic Front (UDF) have criticised the ruling LDF for alleged delays and mishandling of the investigation, particularly after procedural lapses by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) enabled key accused individuals to secure bail. These developments have stirred public debate and amplified scrutiny of the state government’s response to temple asset misappropriation.
The controversy centres on the alleged misappropriation of gold items — including gold‑plated artefacts from the Sabarimala Ayyappa temple — which were reported missing following replating and renovation work. Investigations by the SIT and subsequent Enforcement Directorate (ED) inquiries have led to multiple arrests and interrogations, though legal proceedings and probe actions remain ongoing.
Analysts say the BJP’s focus on the Sabarimala gold theft case is aimed at consolidating its traditional vote base and appealing to sections of the electorate for whom faith and cultural identity are pivotal. Whether this strategy translates into electoral gains will depend on how the broader narrative of governance and development plays out during the campaign and how other political fronts counter these charges.
