The death toll in a suspected hooch tragedy in Bihar’s East Champaran district has risen to seven, with multiple people succumbing after consuming alleged spurious liquor despite the state’s longstanding alcohol prohibition. The grim update underscores ongoing concerns about unsafe illicit liquor circulating in the region.
The incident unfolded in the Turkauliya and Raghunathpur areas of Motihari, where villagers began falling ill after reportedly consuming toxic homemade liquor. Initial deaths were reported earlier this week, and over the past 48 hours additional victims have died while undergoing treatment, taking the total fatalities to seven.
Several others remain hospitalised in serious condition, with doctors noting symptoms associated with toxic alcohol poisoning. Local health officials said that some patients are under close observation while others have been discharged after receiving medical care.

Bihar has enforced a total ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol since 2016, but such tragedies have periodically occurred, pointing to a persistent underground market for illicit liquor. The East Champaran case has prompted police action, with arrests reported and investigations underway to trace the source of the contaminated liquor.
Families of the victims and community members have expressed shock and grief, noting the profound impact of the losses on local households. In one particularly poignant detail, the daughter of one of the deceased had been due to be married in mid‑April, highlighting the personal toll of the tragedy.
Officials have called for intensified enforcement against illegal liquor production and distribution, with local authorities pledging to step up raids and crack down on suppliers. The incident has also reignited debate over the effectiveness of the state’s prohibition policy and the need for stronger mechanisms to prevent the manufacture and sale of toxic hooch.
