Authorities in Uttar Pradesh's Bahraich district have imposed the National Security Act (NSA) on eight individuals accused in last year's deadly communal clashes, signalling a firm stance on maintaining public order ahead of this year's festivals. The preventive detention measure, enacted under the stringent anti-terrorism law, targets suspects linked to the October 2024 violence that claimed one life and caused widespread destruction. District Magistrate Akshay Tripathi issued the order on September 30, with formal notification released Thursday via a police statement, underscoring the administration's commitment to preemptive action.
The accused—Maroof Ali, Nankau, Mohammad Fahim, Mohammad Afzal, Mohammad Zeeshan, Javed, Shoeb Khan, and Saif Ali—have remained in custody since their arrests following the incident. Superintendent of Police Ram Nayan Singh explained that the NSA invocation stems from detailed police reports and his own recommendation, aimed at "maintaining law and order, public peace, and public safety in the district."
All eight face charges related to the unrest, which erupted on October 13, 2024, during a Durga idol immersion procession in the Maharajganj area of the Mahsi subdivision. Tensions flared over the use of a DJ system for music playback, leading to heated exchanges between Hindu procession participants and local Muslim residents.
The clashes quickly escalated into mob violence, resulting in the fatal shooting of 22-year-old Ramgopal Mishra, a Hindu youth, and injuries to several others. Enraged crowds torched houses, shops, a hospital, motorcycles, and cars, inflicting significant property damage in a predominantly rural belt of northeastern Uttar Pradesh. Over 50 people were arrested in the immediate aftermath, with investigations revealing underlying frictions in the communally sensitive region.
Bahraich, bordering Nepal, has a history of sporadic Hindu-Muslim tensions, often amplified during religious processions, prompting heightened security protocols in recent years. Human rights groups have criticised the NSA's use here, arguing it risks bypassing due process in riot cases, though officials defend it as essential for deterrence.

As Uttar Pradesh gears up for this year's Navratri celebrations, Durga idol immersion processions are slated for Friday across the state, including Bahraich. Additional police deployments, community dialogues, and route restrictions have been announced to avert repeats. The NSA detentions, allowing up to a year of custody without trial, reflect broader efforts by the Yogi Adityanath-led government to curb communal flare-ups amid rising political scrutiny on law enforcement.
With over 100 FIRs filed in similar incidents statewide last year, this move serves as a stark reminder of the fragile peace in India's heartland.
