A controversy has erupted after a Congress worker allegedly vandalised a party office in Assam’s Bijni and kicked a photograph of late singer Zubeen Garg during a protest, with police registering an FIR and making an arrest in the case.
The incident reportedly took place amid unrest within the Indian National Congress after the party decided not to field a candidate from the Bijni constituency. A viral video showed a man kicking Garg’s poster mounted on a wall and damaging property inside the office, with chairs seen overturned and windows broken.
Reacting strongly, Assam minister Pijush Hazarika termed the act “heinous” and accused the Congress of disrespecting the sentiments of people while allegedly using the singer’s name for political mileage. He said the incident exposed what he described as the party’s “duplicity.”

Congress sources said the worker involved has been suspended, while Assam Police detained him for questioning before formally arresting him. Authorities confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the full sequence of events and any additional involvement.
The incident has drawn widespread attention given Garg’s stature as a cultural icon in Assam. His death in September 2025 in Singapore had already sparked significant public emotion and ongoing legal scrutiny.
Garg had travelled to Singapore to perform at the North East India Festival when he died in an alleged drowning incident. While initial findings pointed to accidental drowning, investigations in India are exploring other angles, and several individuals linked to the case have been arrested, with his family continuing to seek further legal clarity.
