Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the Congress, alleging that the party has lost its ideological moorings and has become captive to divisive forces. Speaking to reporters, Sarma claimed the Congress had transformed into what he termed a “BM party,” an acronym he said stood for “Bangladeshi Muslim,” and accused it of promoting agendas contrary to Assam’s interests.
The Chief Minister criticized Congress leaders for encouraging divisive politics, pointing to Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain as an example of controversial figures rising within the party. Sarma alleged that party meetings, particularly in regions like Sribhumi–Hailakandi, witnessed objectionable activities that went against Assam’s cultural ethos, though he did not provide specific instances.
Referring to a recent Congress meeting, Sarma claimed that the Assam unit’s president, Gaurav Gogoi, was allegedly threatened by two leaders from within his own party. He described Gogoi as a “parachute leader,” suggesting a lack of grassroots connection and questioning his leadership credibility in Assam.

Sarma also reflected on his own political trajectory, stating that leaving Congress for the BJP had been the right decision. “Fortunately, I did not become the Chief Minister from the Congress. Had that happened, my entire life would have remained stained,” he asserted, emphasizing that the party’s current course validated his departure.
Reiterating his criticism, Sarma accused Congress of compromising Assam’s security, identity, and social harmony for political gains. He asserted that under the BJP government, the state remains committed to safeguarding the interests of indigenous communities, maintaining peace, and promoting development across Assam.
Political analysts note that Sarma’s remarks come ahead of upcoming elections, signaling the BJP’s strategy of portraying Congress as disconnected from local sentiments and susceptible to divisive influences, while positioning itself as the protector of Assam’s cultural and political integrity.
