CJP leader Ashutosh Ranka was released by the Assam Police on Sunday evening after being detained in Guwahati along with more than 40 party volunteers. After his release, Ranka said the detention had “finally ended” and alleged that the police action was illegal. He said he would share more details about the incident while addressing the media at Chowdhury Tilla in the Dispur area.
Ranka and the CJP volunteers were detained from the residence of Assam Jatiya Parishad leader Kunki Chowdhury at Chowdhury Tilla, located opposite the Assam Secretariat. The group had gathered there for a regional volunteers’ meeting after the venue for the meeting was changed. Ranka later said the group had asked the police to take them back to the location from where they were detained.
The CJP had initially planned to hold the meeting at Assam Shree Parshuram Seva Sadan on Kharga Choudhury Road in Athgaon. The meeting was later shifted to Chowdhury Tilla. CJP members alleged that the booking at the original venue was cancelled after pressure was put on the organisers.
Before his release, Ranka alleged that the detention was connected to the CJP’s activities in Assam. He said the party planned to visit government schools and raise issues concerning residents and electoral roll revisions. Ranka also accused the Assam government of trying to prevent the organisation from carrying out its planned activities.
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke had earlier demanded Ranka’s immediate release. Dipke said he would travel to Assam with other CJP members and hold a protest outside the police station if Ranka continued to remain in custody. Following Ranka’s release, Dipke said the planned protest would no longer be required.
Ranka said he would address the media at Chowdhury Tilla and provide further details about his detention and the events leading to his release. Assam Police had not publicly stated the reason for detaining Ranka and the CJP volunteers in the statements cited in the reports.
