A 19-year-old woman, identified as Rajmani Kumari, was allegedly murdered in a suspected dowry-related crime in Bihar’s Araria district, with her body reportedly buried in the ground. Police exhumed her remains in the presence of a magistrate after receiving information about the incident. The case came to light after the woman’s family learnt about the alleged crime on Thursday, triggering concern in the area. Police said preliminary findings indicated a suspected murder, while further investigation and a post-mortem examination were being prepared to establish the circumstances surrounding her death.
According to Rajmani’s family, her husband, Shankar Rishidev, frequently quarrelled with her over dowry demands. The couple had been married for approximately one-and-a-half years. Her relatives alleged that the disputes centred on demands for a motorcycle, Rs 1 lakh in cash and a gold chain. They suspect that Rajmani was killed because these demands were not met. The allegations have placed the focus on the circumstances of the marriage and the reported disputes between the couple, although the claims will need to be examined as part of the police investigation.
The family said they learnt about the incident on Thursday, following which the matter came to the attention of the authorities. Police received information that the young woman had allegedly been murdered and her body buried. Officers subsequently reached the location and arranged for the remains to be exhumed in the presence of a magistrate. The recovery of the body marked a key step in the investigation, allowing authorities to proceed with the formal examination required to determine the cause and circumstances of death.

A police official said the case appeared, prima facie, to be one of murder. The officer also noted that the body had begun decomposing, with approximately 60 hours believed to have passed before the recovery. The condition of the remains made a post-mortem examination particularly important for determining the cause of death and identifying any relevant medical or forensic evidence. Investigators are expected to rely on the examination findings, along with statements from family members and other available evidence, to establish what happened to Rajmani.
The allegations have raised concerns about the reported dowry demands and the circumstances in which the woman died. Her family has specifically linked the alleged crime to demands for a motorcycle, cash and gold jewellery, while police have described the incident as a suspected murder at the preliminary stage. These claims have not yet been established through a completed investigation or judicial findings. The post-mortem examination is expected to help clarify the cause of death, while further inquiries may establish the sequence of events leading to the recovery of the body.
Police were preparing to conduct the post-mortem examination as the investigation continued. The findings will be important in determining the medical cause of death and supporting the next stages of the case. Investigators will also need to examine the family’s allegations concerning dowry demands and establish the responsibility of those involved through evidence. As of the available report, no further details about arrests or formal charges were provided. The case remains under investigation, with the circumstances surrounding Rajmani Kumari’s death yet to be fully established.
