University of Lucknow has initiated an internal inquiry and police have detained an assistant professor for questioning following allegations that he engaged in objectionable conversations with a female student and claimed he could leak university examination papers in exchange for undue favours, officials said on Friday.
The accused faculty member, identified by police as Paramjeet Singh from the Zoology department, has denied the allegations and claimed he is being falsely implicated due to “internal politics” within the university. The controversy surfaced after audio clips of alleged phone conversations between the professor and the student circulated widely on social media.
In a statement, the university administration said it follows a “zero-tolerance” policy toward any conduct that compromises the dignity of the institution or affects the academic environment. Vice Chancellor J P Saini directed the university’s Internal Complaints Committee to submit its report within 24 hours, stressing that strict action would be taken if the allegations are proven.

The university further stated that its controller of examinations filed a formal complaint regarding the alleged paper leak claims made in the viral audio clips. Based on the complaint, an FIR was registered at Hasanganj police station under relevant penal provisions. According to the Lucknow Police, the case is being investigated by the assistant commissioner of police, Mahanagar.
Police said the complaint accuses the professor of holding obscene conversations with the student, offering undue academic benefits, and making claims related to leaking university examination papers. Officials confirmed that the accused has been detained for questioning while further legal proceedings continue. Statements from the professor, the student, and several other students were also reportedly recorded at the university’s proctor office as part of the inquiry process.
Meanwhile, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) demanded immediate dismissal of the professor and strict legal action. ABVP Lucknow University unit president Jai Srivastava urged the university administration and the Uttar Pradesh government to invoke stringent laws relating to examination integrity and sexual harassment. The case has intensified concerns regarding academic ethics and institutional accountability within higher education institutions.
