Iran has indicated that it will “reassess” ongoing peace negotiations with the United States following the latest round of military strikes, signalling renewed uncertainty over diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions between the two countries. The development comes amid heightened regional conflict and a fresh exchange of attacks involving multiple military sites in West Asia.
Ismail Baghaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that Tehran would review the status of negotiations in light of the overnight military escalation. According to reports from the Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA), he said the diplomatic process could not be viewed separately from the evolving security situation on the ground.
Baghaei emphasised that a stable environment is essential for meaningful negotiations, warning that inconsistent messaging and shifting positions from the United States were undermining progress. He also accused Israel of contributing to regional instability through repeated ceasefire violations in Lebanon, further complicating diplomatic efforts in the region.

Reiterating Iran’s position, the foreign ministry spokesperson said that diplomacy and military preparedness operate in parallel, suggesting that Tehran’s defence and diplomatic institutions remain coordinated in responding to current developments. He added that Iran would continue to act “where necessary” in response to perceived threats, reflecting a hardened stance amid escalating tensions.
The comments follow a reported surge in hostilities, including drone and missile exchanges targeting US military positions in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan. Iranian sources claimed the strikes were carried out by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in response to earlier US attacks on Iranian radar systems, air defence installations and command centres near the Strait of Hormuz.
Additional reports suggested that IRGC operations also targeted facilities at a US airbase in eastern Jordan and involved the downing of a US MQ-9 drone. The escalation reportedly followed earlier incidents involving US and Iranian forces in the region, further intensifying fears of a broader conflict.
Prior to the latest developments, US President Donald Trump had indicated that negotiations with Tehran were in their “final throes,” with the possibility of a deal emerging within days. However, the renewed cycle of strikes has now cast doubt on the immediate future of diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran.
