Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday urged social media platforms to ensure fair revenue sharing with content creators, stressing the need for equitable monetisation across the digital ecosystem. Speaking at the Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA) Conclave, he said the principle of fair distribution must be uniformly implemented.
Vaishnaw said creators across the spectrum — including journalists, traditional media houses, influencers, professors and independent creators in remote regions — should receive a just share of platform earnings. He emphasised that the digital economy must reward those who generate original content rather than disproportionately benefiting large technology platforms.
Calling for reforms in monetisation models, the minister noted that “everywhere the principle now has to be set right", underlining the urgency of correcting revenue imbalances in the creator economy. He added that the issue affects both established organisations and emerging voices using social media to disseminate information and research.

Vaishnaw also highlighted the growing importance of trust in the digital age, describing it as the binding force of key societal institutions such as the media, legislature and judiciary. According to him, this trust is increasingly being challenged by the rapid spread of misleading and manipulated online content.
Warning about the risks posed by deepfakes and synthetic media, he said such content is steadily eroding public confidence in institutions. He called on platforms to take greater responsibility for monitoring and addressing misinformation, asserting that technology companies must play a proactive role in reinforcing credibility in the information ecosystem.
The minister concluded by urging social media firms to recognise their broader societal responsibility and strengthen safeguards against disinformation while building a more sustainable and trustworthy digital content economy.
